Sustainability in Selling

There are so many benefits to choosing to sell your preloved items, not only for you, but also for the earth. As a company we hold these values near and dear to our hearts and are so excited to contribute to planetary goodness with your help.

BENEFIT #1

Waste Reduction

This might seem like an obvious one, but opting to sell your preloved pieces truly prevents so much waste. According to woollygreen.com,  87% of all textiles are either incinerated or discarded, with their final destination in landfills.

At the same time, an estimated 99% of all textiles are recyclable, as reported by indeginious.com.

We can do one better than recycling though, reusing textile and leather products (like we do here at ÉPROUVÉE), is the most eco-friendly way, as the process of recycling is eliminated.

BENEFIT #2

WATER CONSERVATION

It's no secret the not-so-secret ingredient to all crops is h2o. Perhaps you're wondering, though, just how much water is necessary to grow the plants we turn into textiles.

We've got the answers, and they're much more shocking than you or I could have imagined. It requires a whopping 20,000 (yes, we said thousand) liters of water (or over 5,280 gallons-- enough to allow you to drink a gallon each day for nearly 14.5 years straight) to produce the cotton needed to create a single pair of denim jeans and a single tee shirt.

Don't even get us started on the water consumption of the leather industry.

BENEFIT #3

NO NEW CHEMICALS

This is one of the forgotten environmental impacts the fashion industry imposes on our earth. Chemicals are used in dyes, agriculture, treatments, and more.

Some common chemicals used in textile production are formaldehyde, heavy metals, chlorobenzenes, lead, and countless others. It is estimated by compareethics.com that there are more than 8,000 synthetic chemicals used in production.

These chemicals then leak into our water, causing contamination. It is estimated by www.europarl.europa.eu that 20% of clean water pollution is a result of dyeing and finishing textiles.

BENEFIT #4

CARBON OFFSET

The fashion industry has a massive carbon footprint, just check out this quote from worldbank.org:

"The fashion industry is responsible for 10 % of annual global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. At this pace, the fashion industry’s greenhouse gas emissions will surge more than 50 % by 2030."
